Many of the first land owners in Ogemaw County were speculators who purchased the land for the
rich harvests of pine that covered this vast area. As the timber was removed, much of the property
was abandoned and reverted to the State of Michigan for non-payment of taxes. But some early settlers
came to begin a new life and many present-day Ogemaw residents are descendants of these first landowners.
As genealogists know, land records can sometimes provide insight into the early lives of your ancestors that
are not available through other sources.
